IN PROGRESS – Hodgson Design Associates on Puget Drive

Oversized glass installed on a Hodgson Design Associates project

Sometimes a design calls for something that very few outfits in our area have attempted and succeeded in. This project by Hodgson Design Associates brought on a challenge (that now has turned into an expertise) that we at AMG hadn’t dealt with before, that being handling and installing over-sized glass.

These two houses, perched on a spectacular view corner lot look north over the City of Vancouver and the North Shore mountains, and maintaining this view was a key component in our preliminary design discussions. Originally the idea was to have the main-floor large unit split in two in order to take advantage of standard local glass sizes. This thought, however, was abandoned when we suggested exploring a single piece of glass measuring 16′ wide by 9.5′ tall, which quickly became the specified design for this unit.

Installing this sized unit brought on a new set of challenges to overcome. Not only was the unit dimensionally difficult to maneuver, but the sheer weight of the unit made it impossible to move by manpower without risking breakage. After some consideration, and similar sized units coming up in future projects, AMG decided to invest in a Spyder crane capable of safely moving these weights. The installation itself ended up going smoothly, due to large part on our Journeymen’s abilities and care and the utilization of right kind of machinery… and the view, which truly is one of a kind, now has no interruptions from the living room of this house.

The rest of the windows on these two houses feature Reynaers CS77 window and door frames, Reynaers CP150 lift-and-slide doors as well as local Curtain Wall framing.

IN PROGRESS – AA Robins on Point Grey

AA Robins, Point Grey Road

AA Robins designed house on Point Grey Road in Vancouver

Few projects that we’ve had the opportunity to participate in have created such controversy as this project by AA Robins. In spite of varying opinions on the design of the project, we at AMG appreciated the unique demands the design put on the glazing package. With the City of Vancouver’s strict performance requirements, we were asked to come up with a  glazing solution to a house that has a fully glazed bottom-floor enclosure, and yet had to comply with the required overall U-value of 1.4.

We knew that our partners at Reynaers could provide what we were looking for assuming we’d also specify triple-glazed IGUs. To maintain the design integrity, we decided to eliminate all vertical mullions on the enclosure, and instead used equal width IGUs with SSG joints (structurally siliconed glazing joints). The result was a near seamless glass box that provides even reflection on the wall surface without vertical interruptions.

Project Data:

  • Reynaers CS77 and CS86 window frames
  • Reynaers CP155 Minergie lift-and-slide doors
  • 6mm/6mm/6mm triple glazed IGUs, 90% argon
  • Overall U-value: 1.2
